Sustaining the readiness and training in the Republic of Korea

By Lt. Col. Frazariel I. Castro   The U.S. Army recently deployed its first two rotational units to the Korean Theater of Operations. These deployments, in support of the U.S. defense commitment to the Republic of Korea (ROK) as specified by the mutual defense treaty and presidential agreements, increases theater readiness and strengthens the cooperation and capability between U.S. and ROK forces. Their operational readiness, and the readiness of warfighting units already on the peninsula, is paramount and is a major focus of logisticians throughout the theater as we focus on our ability to “fight tonight.” The 403rd Army Field Support Brigade (AFSB), a subordinate unit of the U.S. Army […]

Army watercraft supporting the Pacific Pivot

Army watercraft supporting the Pacific Pivot

By Maj. Bruce Hodges   As part of recent government initiatives, the United States is continuing its “Pivot to the Pacific,” expanding and intensifying its role in that region. In line with that focus, the U.S. Army is increasing its presence across the theater and has increased the size and scope of bilateral exercises with many of its regional partners. Because many Asian allies are peninsular or island nations, U.S. and allied planners across the Pacific are deploying Army watercraft for use during exercises, humanitarian relief missions and for potential contingency missions. About one-third of the Army’s watercraft fleet is permanently based in Japan in support of efforts in the […]

Leveraging students’ engineering expertise to bridge the gap between Soldier and system By Col. Michael E. Sloane, MAJ Toby Birdsell and Capt.(P) Tom Beyerl   Project Manager Soldier Sensors and Lasers (PM SSL) is in the business of developing the most advanced maneuver and targeting sensors ever fielded. A sometimes unwanted adjunct to advancement, however, is complexity, one of the greatest enemies of usability. Recognizing this critical relationship, the PM SSL team continuously seeks opportunities, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Maneuver and Fires Centers of Excellence, to connect with current and prospective warfighters through “touch points,” warfighter juries that enable the PM SSL team to tailor equipment designs to […]
