DESCRIPTION:

Joint Tactical Ground Stations (JTAGS) are forward-deployed, echelon-above-corps, transportable systems designed to receive, process and disseminate direct down-linked infrared data from space-based sensors. They provide commanders with real-time warning, alerting and cueing information on ballistic missile launches.

Ongoing product improvement efforts will integrate JTAGS with the next-generation Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) satellites. Five JTAGS are deployed worldwide as part of the U.S. Strategic Command’s Tactical Event System. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Soldiers operate JTAGS to provide 24/7 support to theater operations.

BENEFIT TO THE WARFIGHTER

JTAGS processes satellite data and disseminates ballistic missile warning or special event messages to warfighters in support of regional combatant commanders over multiple theater communication systems.

PROGRAM STATUS

  • 1QFY13-4QFY15: Contractor logistics support continues in support of JTAGS legacy (Block 1) system
  • 3QFY13: Conducted Preliminary Design Review/Critical Design Review for new contract, JTAGS Pre-Planned Product Improvement (Block 2), which includes development of SBIRS geosynchronous satellite integration, desheltering, improved cyber posture, improved human factors and user interface, new mission processing and operating system and new log support system
  • 3QFY15: Conducted initial JTAGS P3I Developmental Test and Train-the-Trainers

PROJECTED ACTIVITIES

  • 4QFY16: Conduct JTAGS P3I Operator Limited User Test
  • 2QFY17-3QFY17: Field JTAGS P3I (Block 2) Trainer and OCONUS-1
