DOD Acquisition awards nomination period begins

FORT BELVOIR, Va. (April 14, 2015) —The nomination period for the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology (USD (AT&L)) Awards Program begins today and runs through May 27.
The awards include the Individual Achievement Award, which recognizes top performers in each of the 16 functional categories. The Defense Acquisition Workforce Development Award recognizes field organizations for their excellence in creating a highly qualified and professional workforce. The David Packard Excellence in Acquisition Award recognizes organizations, groups or teams that have demonstrated exemplary innovation and best practices in acquisition.
New this year is the Should Cost and Innovation Award, which specifically targets and recognizes organizations, groups or teams that have displayed outstanding commitment, innovation and results related to should cost management. As a core, enduring BBP initiative, most programs and contracted activities in DOD now have should-cost targets and are managing to them.
The Hon. Frank Kendall, USD (AT&L), has made recognizing the professionalism of DOD’s acquisition workforce a priority. “Nothing,” he wrote in a white paper released with the draft of Better Buying Power (BBP) 3.0 last September “is more important to our success than our professional ability to understand, think critically, and make sound decisions about the complex and often highly technical matters defense acquisition confronts.”
Indeed, BBP 3.0 and its predecessor have made that recognition a special initiative in BBP. “Managing a major program or a multibillion dollar logistics or other service contract is a high-level of responsibility that demands special ability that should be recognized.” These awards are the USD (AT&L)’s highest means of recognizing that excellence.
