“It’s imperative that we maintain com- petitive rates so that our customers can afford to come here, especially in the time of declining budgets,” he said. “Tat’s something that Tobyhanna works on really hard, all the time: trying to keep our rates down. When program manag- ers have a choice, we want them to choose Tobyhanna.”


MAN IN THE MIDDLE Variety is the hallmark of Zardecki’s career at Tobyhanna Army Depot, where one day might find him touring with senior military leadership and another working with technicians on the shop floor. He champions what he calls the depot’s “corporate philosophy”: Everyone is accountable, everyone is invested and everyone should be heard.


He credits his longevity to a natural curi- osity and thirst for variety—”one day I could be talking to a senator, the next I might be on the floor with a technician”— and dedicated training regimen. Zardecki has attended numerous courses in the field of management, including supervision, leadership, labor relations, maintenance management,


the environment, auto-


mation and lean processes. He is a 1995 graduate of the Senior Executive Fellow- ship Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.


“You can never get enough training, espe- cially now that technology is constantly changing,” he said. “Te opportunities are out there for everyone, and we make a point to emphasize that.”


While Zardecki’s expertise and longevity could have led to a position at the Penta- gon or any other Army installation, his commitment to Tobyhanna is unwaver- ing—and he shows no signs of readying for retirement.


WIRED FOR CHANGE

Zardecki has seen consider- able change during his tenure at Tobyhanna, which now supports a broad technical portfolio, has an expeditionary capability that could can surge and deploy support where needed, and accounts for 19,000 area jobs.


“I’ve had a few opportunities to move to other facilities, but I knew I could accom- plish the most at Tobyhanna,” he said. “It’s been 52 years, and there’s still more to do.”
