THE HUMAN MACHINE INTEGRATION

Army basic research in this area focuses on harnessing biology’s capacity for custom and responsive materials development to support disruptive capabilities such as self- healing, adaptation and protection.


Disruptive energetics. Achieving the range and lethality necessary for the future battlefield requires new and powerful ener- getic materials and propulsive concepts. Army basic research in this area focuses on the discovery, synthesis and experimental verification of these disruptive energetic materials and concepts. Tis research enables overmatching lethality and range of Army ordnance.


Artificial intelligence. Artificial intelli- gence (AI) is expected to strongly enhance performance of all technological compo- nents and Army systems. Army basic research in this area focuses on integra- tion of AI algorithms and approaches to advancing distributive sensing, target


recognition and cooperative and distrib- uted navigation and mobility. Tis research will enable optimal and highly coordi- nated operation of various Army units.


Quantum effects and quantum infor- mation sciences. Quantum science is the study of the behavior of matter and its interactions with energy on the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. Army basic research in this area focuses on generating advances in quantum science by investi- gating the ultimate performance limits of quantum sensors, clocks, networks and information processing through distrib- uted quantum entanglement. Quantum sensing, quantum navigation, quan- tum communications and networks, and processing have the potential to revolu- tionize Army technologies.

and simulation. Both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are being integrated into military training and oper- ations. VR simulations enable Soldiers to prepare in a safe and effective way for real-world situations, such as combat and disaster relief operations. AR systems enhance situational awareness and enable Soldiers to access critical data, instructions and maps in real time to improve their decision-making ability and operational effectiveness.


Te United States Army, like the nation it serves, is constantly evolving to prepare for and meet the demands of today and the challenges of tomorrow. Tis is an excit- ing time for those of us in the acquisition community because materiel modern- ization is an essential part of the Army’s broader continuous transformation effort.
