General Electric to develop and install Trip Optimizer, a cutting-edge software that informs a train engineer when to adjust the throttle to maximize fuel effi- ciency. We also installed Event Recorder Automated Download (ERAD) technol- ogy, an onboard computer that applies latitude and longitude to each second of train-handling event data. Te data from the ERAD is downloaded to data centers at CSX and used to diag- nose locomotive issues and provide information about safe handling of the locomotive during its trip. Te data also allows for quantitative feedback on


the engineer’s performance, once again maximizing fuel efficiency, improving handling and reducing more intensive training for engineers. Te data


Most locomotives have a useful life of between 30 and 50 years. As we pur- chase new locomotives and rebuild older units, we usually put them into service on our longer routes to maximize the benefits of their fuel efficiency and new technology.
